Schyler Vargas, a Mexican-American baritone, most recently performed with The Glimmerglass Festival as Marchese d’Obigny in La traviata and Frank Schultz in Show Boat, and covered Beaumarchais in John Corgliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles with the Châteaux de Versailles Spectacles. Previously, Schyler has been seen as Samuel in The Pirates of Penzance with Dayton Opera and Diesel in West Side Story with both the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and The Atlanta Opera. His concert credits include the baritone soloist for Orff’s Carmina Burana and Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle. Prioritizing new operas in his career, he has worked with Cincinnati Opera’s Opera Fusion, workshopping new works including Rufus Wainwright’s Hadrian and Tobias Picker’s Awakenings, as well as Nicholas Benevides’ Gilberto where he sang the title role at The Glimmerglass Festival. Notable operatic roles include: Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Eisenstien in Die Fledermaus, and Mr. Ford in The Merry Wives of Windsor.
He has participated in various competitions throughout the United States with notable awards including: Rocky Mountain District Winner in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, 2nd place and Audience Favorite in the Harold Haugh Light Opera Competition, 2nd place at the Denver Lyric Opera Guild Aria Competition, and the Audience Favorite with the Lois Alba International Aria Competition. He is an alumnus of the Houston Grand Opera’s Young Artist Vocal Academy.
Before the cancelations caused by the pandemic, Schyler was scheduled to return to the Lyric Opera of Kansas City as Horace Derwent in Paul Moravec’s The Shining and continue performing West Side Story as Diesel with the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari in Italy and a Spanish production as Riff with the Teatro Municipal de Santiago, Chile.
