NARCISSUS: An Ancient Roman Pantomime

Pantomime is a lost art form from the late Roman period where a masked performer would act out a well-known myth in front of a musical chorus. Pantomime artists were the celebrities of their time and while no librettos exist, there is evidence to suggest that all the major playwrights of the age wrote pantomimes.

A note from Santino DeAngelo: For the third and final installment of my Ovidian Trilogy, I wanted to do something formulaically different. After exploring artistic love in Pygmalion and gender-bending transformation in Salmacis, I wanted the culmination of the trilogy to tackle love head-on and settled on the well-known tale of Narcissus. We designed a performance that unfolds in three parts, each part dedicated to a different aspect of love — parental love, romantic love, and self-love.
